Colloidal Oatmeal (INCI Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour) is finely ground oat flour with anti-inflammatory, moisturizing and barrier-restoring properties. FDA approved it as an OTC skin protectant in 2003. Composition and mechanism. Beta-glucans (water-retaining polysaccharides), avenanthramides (phenolic compounds with anti-inflammatory activity), starch, proteins, lipids. Avenanthramides suppress NF-κB and reduce histamine release, which explains the anti-itch effect. Beta-glucans form a protective film and stimulate collagen synthesis in vitro. Where applied. Creams and lotions for atopic dermatitis, anti-itch products, post-procedure care, bath products, cleansers for sensitive skin. In Spain – Aveeno (the default oat brand), CeraVe SA Smoothing, La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+M, Cantabria Labs dermatologic lines. Evidence base. Reynertson 2015 meta-analysis showed colloidal oatmeal reduces itch and erythema in mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis within 2 weeks. Sobhan 2020 RCT in radiation dermatitis: 1% colloidal oatmeal reduced symptom severity by 40% vs control. AAD recommends colloidal oatmeal as an adjunct measure in atopy. Safety. CIR and FDA confirmed safety. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic. Allergic reactions are rare even in gluten-intolerant patients (oats don't contain gluten; cross-reactivity with wheat is possible but very rare). Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Suitable for atopic infants – oatmeal baths are a standard pediatric recommendation. Best suited to: atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, dry-skin itch, post-procedure recovery, post-retinoid dermatitis, post-burn recovery, rosacea in active inflammation, perioral dermatitis.
