INCI: Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract
Aqueous extract of oat kernels, containing avenanthramides – polyphenols with anti-inflammatory activity. Soothes itch and redness in atopic dermatitis, sensitised skin, and after irritating procedures. Works more gently than colloidal oatmeal but with a similar activity profile. Popular in sensitive-skin lines.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Proven anti-inflammatory and anti-itch activity in atopic dermatitis in small controlled studies. Mechanism involves avenanthramides blocking NF-κB signalling. Safety profile is excellent; rare reactions only in cereal allergy.
Avena Sativa Kernel Extract is a water or glycol extract of whole oat kernels. Contains beta-glucans, avenanthramides, phenolic acids, flavonoids. The main active component – avenanthramides – provides anti-inflammatory action by suppressing NF-κB signaling and reducing IL-8 production in keratinocytes. Where applied. Atopic skin care, post-procedure care, sunburn and burn products, anti-dandruff shampoos, baby skin creams. Concentration in finished products – 0.5–10%. Evidence base. Aveeno (J&J) double-blind studies in patients with atopic dermatitis showed itch and SCORAD reduction of 30–50% over 4 weeks with 1% colloidal oatmeal. The FDA has recognized colloidal oatmeal as an OTC skin protectant since 2003. Safety. Hypoallergenic in most patients. Allergic reactions are rare, more common in patients with celiac disease – cross-reaction with avenin (cosmetic extract risk is minimal). Non-comedogenic. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Systemic absorption is minimal; no teratogenic effects. Suitable for gestational itch and postpartum atopic dermatitis. Especially suitable for. Atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, eczema, post-procedure skin recovery, sensitive infant and elderly skin.
