A soothing antioxidant extract. Safe.
Gynostemma or jiaogulan extract (INCI: Gynostemma Pentaphyllum Leaf/Stem Extract) comes from an Asian plant rich in saponins called gypenosides. In cosmetics it is added to serums and creams for its supporting soothing and antioxidant action. As an active it is a supporting component. The plant has a tradition of internal use and interesting lab data, but clinical evidence for its topical effects on wrinkles or firmness is limited. It can add to a formula's antioxidant defense without being its centerpiece. Applied topically it has no meaningful systemic absorption, so its cosmetic use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not a problem. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy risk, suitable for sensitive skin. Like any plant extract, very reactive skin could respond occasionally, though that is uncommon.
