In a formula it forms a soft film on the skin and helps retain water, leaving a smooth feel. This is a functional supporting ingredient, a film former and surface humectant, not an active that penetrates and remodels skin. It improves the feel and a temporary smooth finish, but it does not correct structural wrinkles. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Good tolerance: low risk of irritation and allergy, suitable for sensitive skin. It is wheat-derived, but in topical cosmetic use the gluten content does not pose the issue that the digestive route does for people with celiac disease.
