Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
An antioxidant plant extract. Safe.
Lycium Barbarum Fruit Extract is the extract from goji berry. It contains carotenoids, polysaccharides and vitamin C, a mix with antioxidant capacity. In cosmetics it is added to help neutralise free radicals and defend the skin against environmental oxidative stress. As an active it is a supporting antioxidant. The free-radical defence idea is reasonable given its profile, but specific clinical data in cosmetic formulas are limited; much of the backing is general, about the fruit itself. Useful as a complement within an antioxidant formula rather than its only pillar. For topical use it is not meaningfully absorbed, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without restriction. Tolerance is good: irritation and allergy potential are low, with no comedogenicity rating. It suits sensitive and oily skin. As a botanical extract an individual reaction is possible though uncommon; the rest of the formula also shapes how well it is tolerated.
