Fermented rice filtrate with amino acids and B vitamins. A traditional Japanese cosmetics component, related to sake and koji.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Fermentation breaks large proteins into peptides and makes rice components more bioavailable. Japanese studies record hydration gains and tone evening.
Rice Ferment Filtrate is a fermentation product of polished rice by yeast or molds (often Aspergillus oryzae – the same species behind koji and sake). The filtrate carries amino acids, oligopeptides, B-vitamins, inositol, GABA, ferulic acid. One of the oldest Japanese cosmetic ingredients – historically used by sake brewery workers whose hands looked noticeably younger than their faces. Where applied. Toners, serums, masks with K-beauty and J-beauty marketing (1-10%), brightening products, hydrating lines. On the Spanish market it appears in niche K-beauty stores and in Sesderma azelac. Close relative of SK-II Pitera saccharomyces filtrate. Evidence base. Hwang 2014 on melanocyte cultures showed tyrosinase inhibition and reduced melanin synthesis. Lab models also show anti-inflammatory potential. Few clinical topical RCTs of rice filtrate in humans; results are promising, but evidence quality is B/C. Safety. CIR has not issued a standalone review, but Asian cosmetics has long use experience. Hypoallergenic in most users, non-comedogenic. People with rice allergy (rare) – use with caution. Pregnancy and lactation – likely safe. A natural food product, no systemic absorption through intact skin. No formal restrictions.
