About this ingredient
Saccharomyces Lysate Extract is an extract of broken-down cells of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Yeast cells contain amino acids, nucleotides, B vitamins and cell-wall polysaccharides (beta-glucans, mannans). Published studies do not describe the composition of commercial extracts under this INCI. Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate comes from a different organism and is a separate ingredient. The extract goes into essences, serums and creams sold for hydration, even tone and anti-aging. No published studies of this INCI exist, either on human skin or in cells. Data on beta-glucans as a class do not show how this extract acts. Controlled data exist only for other S. cerevisiae extracts. Whether they match this INCI is unknown. One research group tested an anti-itch yeast extract. Itch dropped more than with a placebo lotion 30 minutes after application (Zhang 2020). In a double-blind trial of 60 patients the extract also outperformed a colloidal oatmeal lotion (Dhurat 2021). The authors did not disclose the concentration. An ointment with a live yeast cell derivative sped up healing of skin graft donor sites in 9 patients (Kaplan 1984). Seven of them felt mild stinging. None of these studies measured hydration, tone, redness or wrinkles. There are no published safety data on this INCI and no data on use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
